I'm a bit unclear as to why fair is a criteria that should be tied to a given product's success since ultimately success is determined by providing a product that consumers want to buy.
But, the PS4 did provide the best hardware, at least as far as specs and performance go, not that this determines commercial success based upon previous generations.
The PS4 did provide said performance at a reasonable price as opposed to bundling excess hardware that was reflected in the price.
The PS4 did provide a good developmental platform for game developers as opposed to a more proprietary system that required a different approach to software engineering that would not apply to other platforms.
And the PS4 maintained the same business model (compared to the previous generation) with respect to game distribution both retail and digital and licensing, which is apparently what consumers wanted.
All this might explain why the PS4 was successful, but again I'm not sure what this has to do with being fair.
