I agree with what others have said about diminishing returns, but we're also reaching the point where games don't really need to look that much better. Developers are and to some extent already have been putting more and more focus on art style, on creativity and with the introduction of VR that will allow yet another avenue to you with. Besides, until 4K is popular 1080P can only allow so much detail.
