Are you talking about subscription fees to play online, always online DRM, overpriced dlc, on disc dlc, microtransactions, big ass day one patches, constant system updates and multiple preorder bonuses depending on which store you bought the game from.
I think most of those things probably did begin in the west but make no mistake the japanese have fully embraced them with open arms. Even nintendo are charging $7 for one character.
