wow. what a bunch of elitist, hypocritical nonsense from this guy. Irregardless of how many choices a player has during a game, the player is still moving down a predetermined path put in place by the developer.
Whether I choose to go left or go right, that's still nothing more than a momentary illusion of choice, as after I've made a decision, I am no more or no less 'locked in' to what the developer intended than if there were no choice at all.
Every story driven game has a beginning and an end, how a player gets between those points is of far less consequence and merit than the overall enjoyment of the journey. I had just as much fun playing the corridor driven Doom 3 as I did playing through the vast, open world of GTA V.
As far as making the most out of the medium, that's exactly what different play-styles afford us as supporters of that medium. I mean, what a stupid thing for him to say. Getting the most out of video games as an entertainment option relates directly to how many options, differently style games, we have to choose from.
If every title was developed according to his strict, completely subjective opinion on what makes a great game, than we would have far less 'choice' over what and how we want to play.
What a shortsighted, condescending goof.
