Is anybody surprised there is a cliffhanger ending? Its intended to be a trilogy.

I mean Mass Effect, Gears, God of War, Last of Us... this isn't something new.

That doesn't mean anything.  Halo 4 was apart of a trilogy and didn't end on a cliffhanger.
