Corrupt gaming media. Companies give out swag bags for their biggest launches. Keep giving 8.5-10's if you want to want to keep getting those. Why do you think some of the bigger sites reviewed AC:U so high, even though it was a buggy mess at launch. Personally, it should have gotten a point taken off of everyone's review for blatant false advertising of the story, which is why I'm amazed that the game has a few perfect scores. |
There's also the flip side of what happens if you're the poor reviewer who doesn't like X game that is both getting stellar reviews from other outlets, AND has a rabidly enthusiastic fanbase. Even without the external pressure of a bribe/swag/ad revenue/exclusive interviews, etc, there's probably also the internal pressure of asking yourself 'Do I REALLY Want Thousands Of People Screaming At Me On Twitter, Facebook, etc, etc For Three Weeks?' which leaves the alternative of either presenting as positive a score as you can without feeling like a total hack, or just skipping the review entirely. ...which, for something like Halo, most people aren't going to be able to get away with.
Anyway, the whole 'hate out of ten' debacle is usually an indication that the Internet fanbase in general does not react well to outliers, regardless of which super hyped title is being discussed today. Bigger the expectations, and the wider the consensus, the more violently the proverbial exceptions to the rule are reacted to. =P
