It all depends, but it's true that the line between a good and bad flashback is very fine. The problem as it relates to video games is that often times when a game has a flashback it breaks the established rules of the game in order to make the narrative work in that situation and that tends to be jarring. Really, one of the first things a writer learns is not to break the rules they establish early in their story for that very reason unless they have a damn good, compelling reason, and more importantly, a well thought out plan to execute it.
