I would not call the gameplay of Fatal Frame to be "dated". It is a game of a seemingly dead genera. The Alone in the Dark series has died. Resident Evil has become lesser version of Gears of War. Silent Hill has also decided to become a series of action games. Parasite Eve is dead. Eternal Darkness was planned to be a series, but sold poorly. Fatal Frames seems to be of the only classic survival horror series that is still around and still bears a resemblance to its original title.

Fatal Frame V uses over the shoulder camera angle, which is inline with modern third person survival horror games (rather the "tank controls" or "camera relative controls"). It also allow the the player to move and attack at the same time, which is also in line with more reticent survival horror games. I would guess that those who consider Fatal Frame V to be dated are not overly familiar with the first few Resident Evil games.

I would say that Fatal Frame V is a mediocre game, but it stands searingly alone in its genera in 2015. I would recommend the game to WiiU owners, but this game will not stand the test of time and will be over shadowed by Fatal Frame II in the years to come.
