Devs should choose a target release date, and then add 6 months because of "polish" and then add another 3 or 4 month because of reasons. And then announce that date. But secretly still be aiming for the original date. If you get 3 months from the original date and the game will be ready on the original date then you can announce something amazing: you're going to release the game earlier than expected, because we're just that awesome!
