It took long enough and it's really just borrowing what's been done elsewhere but it does sound like a significant improvement. I remember saying they needed to have this in place before the Wii U launched but at least they'll have it before the NX pops forth.

I'd guess that the mobile deal provided the real impetus. I wonder if they got outside help on the setup.

Hope the friends thing doesn't end up being more convoluted than necessary.

That's not the case at all. The mobile deal came after. DeNA was originally only purchased to create My Nintendo/My Account. Mobile games came as a result of that, not the other way around.

“Our approach was more about looking at their strengths, and then looking at our strengths, and when we get together we can do something bigger. Our initial discussions were around memberships and backend systems. Through this discussion we said that if we build this backend, we should obviously work on a game. And if we’re making a game, we should use Nintendo IPs.”

The idea that DeNA was purchased to make mobile games is the most annoying misconception out today. They were purchased to help with the unified platform, which is My Nintendo. Mobile games came as a logical conclusion, since mobile is part of that platform.

Also, it's very clear that this does more than borrow. It's more encompasing than any other account service of thie calibur.
