But technical achievements for the era are not valued in later generations. When Sonic adventure was around, the maps were massive like never before seen and the fast gameplay in a platformer the same thing.
I still play SA2 speed stages on my PS3. They are very enjoyable. If you feel the need to bash the game go ahead. I'm not saying its perfect. But the speed stages are definitly a step in the right direction for Sonic gameplay in 3D.

There is no aging outside of graphically. Gameplay is either good or bad. SA2's was always bad. Larger maps and faster speed mean nothing when the level design sucks and the controls are terrible. The speed stages were just as bad as everything else in that game. The music was its only redeeming quality, and I'd argue that even that isn't fitting for a soundtrackof a Sonic game, but that's just preference. Bad controls and bad cameras aren't preference and they are not related to age - especially not in SA2's case. That's a technical issue. Decent camera and controls in a 3D game existed in many 3D platform games before even SA1. It has absolutely no excuse. It's an absolute step in the wrong direction, which is exactly why they've tried so many other directions. The only step in a not terrible direction 3D Sonic has ever taken was in Lost World, and even that was riddled with rampant level design screw ups, and flow-breakers.
These games are not good. None of them are, regardless of age.

Ok, i'm gonna have to disagree. I think the gameplay of the speed stages is good. Its not perfect, but with a bit more care the control would be even better. I was in total control of Sonic while playing SA2. I can't say the same about the other 3D Sonic games. And yes, the camera could also use some more love. But that is what i'm saying SEGA never did. They didnt go the extra step to polish it. The gameplay is definitly good on those stages though. The proof of that is that i regularly still play them on my PS3 cause they are simply fun and the best of 3D Sonic gameplay.
