Although it's unlike that MS will ever make much of a dent to Steam, they are definitely trying to strongarm early adopters of Windows 10 and late users as well by locking anything that comes from them to windows 10 only which I feel is not really that great of a tactic since really they are locking out windows 7-8 users and generally giving a bit of a muddled message, yes they want to commit to PC gamers but they are honestly going about it in the wrong sense. They don't need to become top dog and it's very unlikely that they ever will in the PC market, the best they can do now is just sell their software to as many as possible, sell to mac, sell on Steam, GoG Origin etc because frankly the whole PC market is unlikely to abandon all the other clients and vendors to flock to MS's Windows 10 only store that only sells a few of their titles.
They shouldn't exactly go 3rd party but as they are currently their store is incredibly lackluster and will be for quite a long time with the slim picking of late ports to come over, meanwhile Steam has a ridiculous amount of titles on there (well aware of some duds, every platform has them) as well as their own which are still popular to this day, Blizzard has their own Battle.net client and while they only have a few titles they have largely remained faithful to the PC scene and of course they make their money via merch, WoW and their multiple shops in some games. All I can see MS offering is gears, a console based sequel to an RTS we never got originally, a 3rd and 2nd party late ports and a mixed hybrid MOBA along with FL which I don't see doing amazing either, those offers don't really stand up to what other clients are offering, the whole "oh don't you worry this is the start of them supporting PC", if it was they'd mention an absolute plethora of titles coming to the platform, make mention of exclusive studios to get better ground on the market they once left behind and they are very unlikely to do either.
Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.
