I got into the series around the time III was being promoted and I had pretty much burned myself out on the entire franchise by the time it released. I still picked it up (and I later picked up Black Flag once it had dropped in price), but I really don't have much of an urge to play III and Black Flag, let alone even bother with Rogue, Unity or Syndicate.
I liked the entries that I did play, but they were just too similar mechanically to each other to the point that I lost interest. I don't know if the latter entries change things – I've heard about the naval sections of Black Flag, but I've also heard complaints that every other part of the game is just the same as its predecessors – but most of the marketing material just looks like what I've already played.
