I bet most people in europe know very very little about countries outside of Europe.
It's a lot easier for stupid people to know a lot about other countries when their are a huge number of them within driving distance.
As for your other point though. America is pretty well diverse. It itself is as if it was made up of many different countries (which was the original idea).
You could simply drive to other parts of America to see different cultures believe it or not. Hell some places you can drive down the same road and see 3-4 distinct cultures.
