This book isn't talking about spontaneous generation. Spontaneous generation is simply a sad bullet point on scientific research into origins. Simply put there was a hypothesis that maggots/flies materialize from rancid meat or garbage. The experiment to test the idea was to have two peices of rancid meat set in the sun, one covered and sealed the other uncovered. When both had maggots hours later the researches concluded the hypothesis was true. However the advent of the microscope showed what was really happening.
The only reason I could think that this statement is made in an evolution lesson is because of the primordial soup idea, which is essentially an Abiogenesis theory that points to the origin of evolution.
