No, you cannot. Other controls are supported, but the Wii U GamePad must be turned on and in range of the Wii U, as it is required to play the game. If someone takes the GamePad away during playing, the game will interupt and say that it has lost connectivity with the GamePad. It's not like DKC Tropical Freeze, where I can literally leave the GamePad turned off and play the game without any problem (although you need the GamePad to select the Pro Controller option I believe).
