Undertale is a brand new game, released only on Steam just one month ago. It was well received to say the least, since he got a 94 metascore and 100% of appreciation on steam. But what is it ?

Undertale is a unique RPG for one good reason : It's a RPG when you actually can hurt no ennemis in the whole game. Yep, that's right. You have the choice of killing or sparing every ennemy you encounter. Maybe that monster attacked you because he had some personal problems in his marriage, or maybe because he's looking for money to feed his family. Or because he's a serial-killer thirsty of blood, who knows ? Well, you can know, by asking the ennemy instead of directly attacking him. Your choice.

Undertale is also unique by his battle system,425 which is inspired by shmup : You have to move your character, symbolized by a heart during the battles, to dodge ennemy attacks when it's his turn. And when it's your turn, you can fight the ennemy in attempt to kill him, act with him to possibly understand why he attacked you (or to annoy him even more), to uses classics items, or to spare him (only possible when you've acted with the monster enough, then his name turn to yellow and you can spare him to end the battle).

But the true inspiration for Undertale is clearly another RPG, one of the best ever made : Earthbound.

The story of Undertale could be compared with Earthbound. I won't spoil it in the slightest, but it mades you think a lot about what's going on under the tale (got it ?). The characters, also, are extremely well written and very interresting. The game has the same capacity as earthbound, to create bonds between you and the characters. The game's also very funny !

And finally, the soundtrack. I also won't spoil it since It's way better when you discovered it, but if you absolutely want to listen a bit, here's one. It's not too spoily since it's an early one.

And trust me, the rest of the soundtrack is even better.

If you still hadn't realized my purpose of making this thread : it's to make you play Undertale. It's truly an incredible game, an OVNI in the videogame industry, and, like Earthbound, a game that goes beyond the concept of game. It actually costs 10$ on Steam, for 6-7 hours (for the first run, but you really should play at least two differents run), and it's totally worthy.

Now, if you plan to play the game, you may wonder how will you play it, totally pacifist or as a genocidal ? You can totally play how you want, BUT based on my own experience I would recommand you to play totally pacifist first, then on a second run genocidal. It's only a recommandation and the game is made to be played how you want, but I think there are some subtelties that you could miss if you play genocidal first.
