Less than a year ago it was still all about the holiday season, pre-season doesn't count etc. But it does seem MS has conceded to 2nd place in the US since Phil Spencer has been dismissing the console war for a while now. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-10-09-spencer-xbox-one-team-focused-on-regaining-fan-trust-not-beating-ps4
So yeah, they're not worried about beating Sony anymore and are doing just as you suggest. I'm sure they'll still put some PR stuff out if they do edge out a win in the xbox family or windows 10 family maybe lol.
Anyway there's still some semblance of a sales site in vgchartz, so yes october is still important if we want to argue about something :)
