There are not very many "true" villains around, no human (even if a complete medically defined psychopath) always has a "good" intention, a reason to push forward with what ever "evil" they wish to see come to pass. The truly evil are the ones who knowingly commit autrosities and make everyone else believe they are doing the right thing. Ya gotta look out for those nasty buggers, you'll usually find them high in government or climbing the success ladder in a big corporation. Big boss was one of these people who decided to just create a place he could be leader, whatever he changes into in the future is irrelevant.

Think of yourself ten years ago, would you even call the person reading this that person? I very much doubt you would. In fact to be technical, the you less than a second ago is such a different electrical storm within your brain that you would make a different decision not to even mention the impact the environment (chance) has on that.

People change and they change much quicker than many think, the more drastic the environment empty (prison, more time to think) full activity (war, traveling) the quicker the change.

I think you're confusing psychopath with sociopath. Liquid is a psychopath, he has zero empathy for the world and has a clear, focused objective in life; he doesn't care showing it and crushes anyone in his path. Sociopaths are those who can blend in society, and be manipulative bastards. Big Boss is neither. He was some dude who felt betrayed by his own country and the ideals passed onto him and he chose chaos. No matter the amount of "Sorry Boss I misunderstood you", he's still a cheap bastard who fucked up a lot of people. But yeah, ever since MGS3 every Metal Gear game has tried to make him shine like he's the true hero of the whole franchise, when he is not.
