You don't consider Gears of War genre defining? Nearly every TPS game since is, in some significant way, totally ripping off what Gears of War did. Before Gears of War, there was nothing like Gears of War.

No, I largely consider Gears to be a refinement of Resident Evil 4, which is genre defining. See? Obvious problem.


Innovation is a slippery slope as I largely believe innovation is really just the evolution of the same ideas we have already seen before and I think more credit has to go to the first person who does it right as opposed to just the first person to do it. As for gears specifically i say it took more of its inspiration from killswitch then RE4, but gears was the first game to nail the cover shooter perfectly so thats why  most ther 3rd person cover shooters since would say they took their inspiration from gears not killswitch, so id day its genre defining in the sense that it is the game that did it right and popularized the mechanic
