Yes, unfortunately amiibos force you into classic mode, missing lots of the fun stuff.
You hold the amiibo to the gamepad and the figure appears on screen (in edit mode) as a power up. It will look like a mushroom with ? in the game.
Ugh I'm getting stuck again making my new level, need more height! Or break Mario's legs so he can't jump as high...
