he left to get water and takes way too long and then finally he grabs a blanket to smother it (should have been the first move and would have ended the fire there), but it seems at that point it was either too late or he didn't try long enough and went away for more water

Inestead of smothering the fire with the blanket, he kept lifting it off, effectively using it to fan the flames. He should be nominated for the Darwin award.
