All three console makers are branching out at the moment with the likes of more windows 10 support from Ms, PS now from Sony, and smartphone games from Nintendo.
I imagine it's due to the increasingly competitive nature of the industry and the fact that they want plan b in case of a decline in their consoles sales or just to expand into new markets.
