I'm forced to ask myself, what does MS gain by losing the console war in the US? It's an odd question but I believe there's something we're missing at the moment. I'm not going to suggest they want the XB1 brand dead so they can focus on PC but I'm not going to discount that idea either. Let me put it this way: How would fans respond to MS saying 'We're sorry to announce that we're no longer participating in the console business' V 'We tried our hardest but unfortunately because of cercumstances beyond our control, we've had to close the XB division.' Which would make it easier to swollow for their console fans? |
Well we could see the beginning of what many thought was probably inevitable at some point. The Xbox brand overall hasn't made money and the Xbone is hemorrhaging money. They may be scaling back spending on it to cut out after they have slogged along for four years or so. People always say MS is so rich they can afford losses but here's the thing: they became that rich by only taking those losses that they believe will lead to gains or some kind of benefit. But with Xbox 360 only reaching profitability late in the seventh gen and the Xbone - the follow up to their biggest success - getting trounced in spectacular fashion, they may be seriously questioning what benefit there is to propping up the brand. Or they are just the developer carrying the idiot ball right now. I mean, Sony was carrying it at the PS3 launch and Nintendo was carrying it for a good three years. MS has carried it their fair share of times so maybe they decided to pick it up again :P
