Hardware revisions happen all the time. ps and xbox slim models, PSP go, GBA SP etc. The point is to sell more systems and improve user experience.
New 3ds is the same just more elaborate, similar to the DSi. I don't see it as something seperate (like I kind of do with GBC). Still, it is easily the definitive version. The improved 3d is great, and the extra buttons and better performance make it great to use.
