The 3DS isn't a failure. Nor is the DS an anomaly.
The DS did exceptionally well and appealed to the mass market audience.
The 3DS started off well once it hit the right price and had the right software but has been struggling of late and is now doing poorly compared to the DS. The 3DS has certainly failed to capture the mass market audience despite the growing number of gamers. Mobile is where they are these days.
