It's not celebrated a lot here in my region, and it commemorates the battle of Puebla, where Mexico's army effectively pwned France's army back in XIX century. Or something like that.

I think its funny that the whole USA celebrates this and not all of mexico. haha. You should celebrate, for the sake of having an excuse to celebrate something and have fun.

We have tons of things like this, celebration is kinda a national sport in my country... but so far this is one of those forggoten days, out numbered and with almost no real long range weapons (just big knifes) the mexican army (composed by peasants) defeated the french army (A regular and well trained army)...
