I hope it does get used for games. There could be two versions of some games, one supplied on scratch resistant Blu-Ray disc and the other version on mulitple DVDs for big linear games. For those developers who think DVD just wouldn't cut it for their game, like for an open world game such as GTA V (when you drive from one location and back it's no joy swapping discs twice or more times) they could only release a Blu-Ray version, again pushing many current owners to upgrade. The few XBox Elite owners I know, owned another 360 version before this, they upgraded to the Elite in the hope it was free of hardware issues and some additional features like a HDMI port. At least someone I know has such a big 360 games library he would certainly buy it if just proven to be more far more sturdy. For the PS3 this would IMO be good news, more games developers will to take into account Blu-Ray benefits like sustained predictable reading speeds throughout discs. This would result is much better and optimised off disc streaming games. A default harddrive for at least Blu-Ray equipped 360s (storage is required for the latest specs) would also be very beneficial. More demanding games could always assume a harddrive being present. |
Its a very nice concept. One that would benifit both the Xbox owners that purchased it, the cost and availability of blu ray movies - A definate Sony win there, and Sony PS3 owners. Its certainly possible to do but i'll let you make up your own mind. They would have to duplicate valuable retail space It would induce some confusion with customers as far as naming and presenting the titles go There would be an outcry by Xbox360 owners and a lot of annoying PS3 fanboys will say "I told you so" and we'd never hear the end of it. The market share may not justify it - If there are only 5 million Blu ray X360's then whats the point of making a third port to take advantage of another set of capabilities? Granted it would be a cheap port but you've then got extra headaches to worry about with supply of the different versions. Look at how often the Pro SKU went out of stock for instance. They dont even take advantage of the HDD much for the Xbox360 consoles! Granted games like GTAIV do stream off it when available but still, its something Microsoft seems reluctant to allow. Though this restriction may come to an end at some point. There are certainly advantages to it, but there are also disadvantages and its questionable as to whether or not they would go down that path. Ok the Nintendo 64 had an upgrade, and that made things work better but im not sure how many people took advantage of it. Did the PSP have a hardware upgrade? I can't remember.
Tease.
