Arcanum was pretty non-linear. You could complete quests out of order and in varying ways. You didn't need to follow the story at all. You character stats changed the gameplay. Not just from a fighting perspective. If you character was really dumb you could only grunt and people treated you like an idiot. If you were an orc or orge you were subject to racism. Not only did it have multiple endings but it also had multiple endings for the different areas in the game. So all the quests you did in an area and how you went about doing them, or if you neglected the area etc effected the ending you got for any given area after you completed the game. It was non-linear in a number of ways.

BTW you could set the fighting system to turn based if you wanted to. Not that turn based gameplay defines whether its JRPG or not as it most certainly wasn't.
