Usual Nintendo changing names every gen the console/hh had a bad or downtime.

NES = sucess -> SNES
SNES = not much sucess - N64 (don't carry NES part)
N64 = failure -> Gamecube (throw the past away)
GC = ubber failure -> Wii
Wii = ubber sucess -> WiiU (finally keeping the name like NES-SNES)
WiiU = biggest failure -> NX (or whatever they decide to call it officialy on launch)

Gamecube kept the name for a very long time until it declined a lot, them changed to DS and with 3DS failure will change again...

All very predicable

SNES was certainly a success. Just because it didnt sell as much as the NES, it sold more consoles than it's competitor. 3DS had a rough launch but considering it has sold a plenty and steamrolls it's competitor I would say it certainly doesnt qualify as a "failure". It just happend to succeed one of the most succesful consoles of all time.
