Usual Nintendo changing names every gen the console/hh had a bad or downtime.

NES = sucess -> SNES
SNES = not much sucess - N64 (don't carry NES part)
N64 = failure -> Gamecube (throw the past away)
GC = ubber failure -> Wii
Wii = ubber sucess -> WiiU (finally keeping the name like NES-SNES)
WiiU = biggest failure -> NX (or whatever they decide to call it officialy on launch)

Gamecube kept the name for a very long time until it declined a lot, them changed to DS and with 3DS failure will change again...

All very predicable
