I got both my Wii U and the PS4 I bought brand new last night for below MSRP, so I could just use the extra $150 I saved between the two on one external for each of them if I wanted to. So I personally don't care.

Just upgrade the internal PS4 HDD. After that, use the replaced 500GB HDD as external drive on the Wii U. No need to buy two HDDs.

That's actually a pretty good idea, should I ever care to upgrade my HDD on either. With how cluttered my gaming space already is, I'll leave it be for now. I have my Dreamcast sitting literally on top of my Wii U lol. Sort of poetic considering how both ended up in history. (I use my Wii U much more hut the Dreamcast isn't exactly flat on top, and the latter is the only console that I could place on top of another without crushing one, given my limited shelf space.)

You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt!  I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading.  After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!
