Well, I don't think the first wave of VR headsets is meant to really have mass market appeal. Just like any new tech it starts of expensive and relies on early adopters (many of whom will likely already have PCs capable of running VR) to carry the tech until costs come down. Just like with HDTVs or Blu-ray players.

 

The Gear VR is the HMD most likely to have mass market appeal. Since it only costs $99 and runs off of any new Samsung phone.
