While I love Super Mario Maker - I even wrote a glowing review - I can understand why some people don't like it.
d21lewis' point about progression is a good one. I like the feeling of playing levels, finding hidden items, beating bosses, and "finishing" a game. And you can't quite capture that in Super Mario Maker. In that way, a game like New Super Mario Bros. U is, I think, superior to Super Mario Maker.
That said, I'm very glad to own Super Mario Maker, and I recommend it to anyone who owns a Wii U.
