Yep it's not all or nothing. There is a lot of space between the future of gaming and a gimmick.
Mobile phone games, once tauted as the future of gaming (actually still are) are happily co-existing with console games.
VR games can co-exist fine with family room friendly gaming.

I expect VR to have a similar place in the market to racing wheels. Most major games won't require VR, but will support it and be a better experience with VR. Most fully VR games will be indie titles I think.
