Why Sony can't just let God Of War die and move on?

Apparently it was planned as an open world sci-fi FPS with modular world building coupled with scripted events. Imagine Destiny but directed by Stig Asmussen and developed by Santa Monica. I really love Destiny's concept but I hated the execution so this news was really painful to me.

They need to keep making money so they are stuck developing God of War games and side projects until they can muster the resources to launch another new IP (which will take years sadly).
