As gamers we tend to value our own needs over the bigger picture and as such we miss something PS+ offers developers. When Rocket League (formally known as Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle Cars on the PS3) was finally released, it did so to huge critical acclaim. It was downloaded by 5 million people on the PS4 and PC. Clearly the PS4 took the biggest portion of that 5 million because of PS+ and then following that it appeared in the NPD which showed it was also bought by PS4 owners. This sudden rush of exposure catapulted it into cult status.
Because of this perceived 'over night success', it has now grown in popularity with E-sports showing huge interest and with a film adaptation in the offing, as well as a line of toys being considered. One could argue -- and I think it's a valid argument -- that PS+ has given Psyonix an opportunity that would never have existed. They stand to make millions off of the launch and in no small thanks to Sony. Other developers will be keen to try and emulate this success and so PS+ has now become as valuable to them as it is to us.

Rocket League surprised everyone when it landed as a free-to-play title for PlayStation Plus members in July. Less than a month later, the game had been downloaded more than five million times across PS4 and PC. Now it may be coming to the big screen, MCV reports.
Developer Psyonix said that they've been approached by several companies and individuals to discuss a film and a television show, as well as a licensed toy line.
"We've had discussions with various people and studios in Hollywood about making movies based on Rocket League, or a TV show," said Psyonix vice president of marketing Jeremy Dunham. "We've had people come our way with possible toy deals and lots of cross-promotions outside of our game.
"We are getting to the point where the people who want to work with us are much much more famous. It's crazy. The meetings that I have with new companies who I didn't realise were Rocket League players — it blows my mind.
"TV series and films are being pitched to us. There's nothing to announce, there's nothing official, we haven't signed any dotted lines. A big reason for that is there are lot of questions about Rocket League in general, about the fiction, the lore and how that would tie-in to a television show or film."
We've seen how Rocket League plays in an eSports environment. We've also gotten a taste of what Rocket League would sound like with real announcers. So what do you want out of a fictional Rocket League adaptation?
