Is it acceptable for a Political leader to shun the National Anthem?

Exactly. Patriotism is effectively saying 'this country is better than every other one because I was born in it'. Seems pretty arrogant to me

Totally agree with you. By extension Patriotism is also saying "I'm better than you because you're different" which is pretty much the root of the greatest evil's in human history.
