I understand that the striking part is debatable in translation with 'leave', or something like that. However, looking past the fact that divine word should obviously be less ambiguous, the rest of the quote is astonishingly ridiculous.
This is another one I'd find difficult to reconcile with your aforementioned belief. While I concede it isn't condoning beatings, I think everyone would agree it's much more egregious.
I would never suggest that any individual of any religion would think counter to what you'd said simply by only knowing their religion. That'd be absurd and I hope you're not of the impression that I would. But I am genuinely curious how people reconcile with passages like the ones above.
