Ok, so I usually don't scream OVERRATED to something I like less than the majority, but this claimed masterpiece called Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain has so many blatant flaws, both in gameplay design and story telling, that I really can't understand how almost every review scores it with a 9 or better.

I admit it offers a lot of freedom in how to tackle missions, has a great sense of progressoin and the difficult raises perfectly along you raise your capabilities. The buddy system, the gadgets, building up mother base, etc. It all fits together greatly, making a damn strong core of the game.

BUT, how can a game be unanimously called a masterpieces when:

  • most of the main missions are fetch quests, just filler
  • almost every side quest is also a fetch quest, but a smaller one
  • the game is LARGE, so these two flaws make the game very repetitive
  • the open world is inconsistent and offers nothing by itself. It's a huge level and the missions play on little chunks of it. Outside the missions it has nothing. No random events, no outposts to free, no militia, no civilians.
  • you DO have a lot of freedom to finish missions, but you will get rewarded the most if you play the non lethal way, stealthy and extracting soldiers. So most players will feel restricted on the way they do the missions.
  • the story telling is just a joke, sometimes it's slapstick goofy like, the next time over dramatic. Most of the time Snake is an emotionless, speechless avatar, but other characters hold some unenjoyable non-sensical monologues. (This is just Kojima style, nothing new here, but now even Snake isn't likeable)
  • The first ending, where you face the main villan, is just an awful joke. (REVEEEENGE!! )
  • Credits before and after every mission. Credits before the mission spoil every character that will appear in that mission. But hey the name Hideo Kojima appears like 300 times during the game, so it's worth it!
  • During some intense moments you get a "to be continued" screen (for example while being chased or attacked) then you can go back to mother base, do side missions, etc. Then go back to being chased. WTF??
  • The story itself doesn't take itself important enough, so instead of cutscenes it tells its majority through cassettes. Well if you don't give a fuck about what you're trying to tell me, I don't either.
  • And then after it seems to end, it goes on by reclycing missions until I get the true ending? - So I have to save this person I already saved again, this time under more difficult circumstances, to advance in the story? Ok, makes sense.
  • Quiet, quiet, oh boy...her whole presentation is just embarassing and I felt like a perv watching the camera zoom to her boobs every 2 seconds. And that "side mission" in mother base where she's locked up in a cage and you watch her shower and get her bra off (of course, why not take off my bra in front of some old pervs who hold me as a prisoner). OMG. Like watching an animal in a zoo...
  • I really felt insulted by this. I don't buy your game to jerk off to some barely clothed hot chick with big boobs, Kojima!

So don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed the game, because the core gameplay mechanics work perfectly, but damn, I just get mad about how this industry likes to lick that man's balls and ignore all the flaws and contradictions in his work. UNANIMOUSLY.

Or maybe I am delusional and see things the rest of the world doesn't, so tell me what you think.

  • they are not fetch quests, they take up to an hour or more and they bring out the best the game has to offer
  • yes, as with every single open world game to ever exist
  • there are so many quick travel methods this is not even funny
  • there are a lot of the secret things and easter eggs that are accessed by going through the map. The bases and outposts are so well designed, it is a pleasure to go through them. Did you just go through all of them shooting and killing everyone?
  • what's wrong with that? The game is built around stealth, it is a game about stealth (also) so why wouldn't it reward the way it wants to reward? For pure crazy action there are the Side Ops
  • emotionless? He has a lot of expressions. Never did Snake talk a lot, in MGS 4 also he didn't. He talks in the tapes and when he talks he actually has something meaningful to say.
  • did you look into Snakes and Miller face when that line was said? I didn't laugh, did you? You have a strange sense of humour. Did you understand the meaning of that scene? I guess not
  • the story is told as a episodic tv series. His name shows up 300 times as well as any other developer. Did you notice them? I guess not, maybe because they all seem giberish to you and you don't care. You just care to hate on Kojima
  • so what? Can't you accept different ways to tell a story? Seems to me you had very strange expectations from this game. This also tells me you are don't have great taste since you are complaining about something that is unique to this game and unique things are always welcomed.
  • exactly, you had some very strange expectations from this game. The Metal Gear Saga ended with MGS 4. What did you expect more? We all know what happened with Big Boss and Ocelot and Liquid Snake.
  • Peace Walker worked similarly. Did you prefer to not have the extra missions? There are a lot of content after the first ending. Which is not even an ending. Just because the credits showed up people think it is an ending. But a book doesn't end on chapter 1 if there is a chapter 2.
  • This is the only thing I agree with you (which by itself doesn't matter much but I wanted to refute your points because people deserve to hear another side of the story). Quiet was not well designed for the world it is in, but one can understand, maybe. She is sexy, all characters are sexy. Snake, Miller, Ocelot are all very handsome man. Tall, strong, muscular, etc. Seeing Snake's marvelous ass all the time can be countered by seeing Quiet's breasts. But anyway still it bothered me a little the camera angles on the breasts.
