Actually Nintendo DID invent the D-Pad. There was something similar to the D-pad out before Nintendo made it on the Coleco Vision and the Intellevision, however those were disk pads, and they sucked royally.
Nintendo inovated and made a beter design using the 4 direction "pad" which made controlling much easier. There was like one attempt at a D-pad before it... maybe and it sucked.
