In answer to OP: Definitely a yes, it's been happening for years now, Final Fantasy is influenced by alot of WRPG's (which were really popular at the time) when it first began.
I'd say Kingdom Hearts is pretty close to meshing both WRPG and JRPG worlds completely, if only because it took one of the biggest companies in Japanese entertainment and one of the Biggest companies in Western Entertainment and meshed it into one experience.
