To be fair, Evermore was made by Square (USA), and much of the game was dictated by Square Japan.
Septerra Core was/is a decent example of a WRPG with JRPG like qualities. Smaller world, linear gameplay, ect.
And one could argue that Betrayal at Krondor/Betrayal in Antara was rather linear, and ultra-story driven:
