The real problem with this is physics. Just the other day i read how Assassins Creed gravity is between 1.2 to 2 times earth gravity (depends which game you are looking).

If a map have 780 mi², but the characters move at 20km/h when walking, well, it is not the same thing. Also, like someone said, the area size can be a lie, if there is only small and narrow passages (like in Dragon Age Inquisition.

Honestly, this is more random number players try to inflate the importacy. In the end, the size is the least important aspect of RPG, as long it is not too small. I doubt i will like FFV more than The Witcher or Dragon Age or XCX because of that factor. All of them are above the necessary size for a good RPG.
