It's simply natural that the U.S. would wind up different from Europe. As for spelling, there was a time when there was no true standard for spelling, and when early dictionaries began being compiled and circulated they often favored (as they should) the local spelling. When you add in the difference in accents it's actually more surprising that we have as much in common as we do lol
