I think you have to look at culture for a start, for us in Europe Football took off because it was a very local and tribal affair, what this means is it was a sport the masses could enjoy with out the high prices of more at the time glamorous sports. This is why a lot of football clubs were formed as it didn't require mass amount of funds to do so and the players were representing you and everyone in your area and it was an very easy sport to get into, this is also why countries like Brazil, Argentina etc... who have a large group living in poverty produce many players as for many it was the only escape for them even today which is why a lot of new talent consistently hails from there.

Over the decades this built up into something far bigger then what was expected, to me it looks like the different culture in the US made the country not as quick to embrace it as it didn't carry that same tribal like buzz for them which also made it less of an escape in the US for anyone who may have possibly been in poverty then in Europe, SA and other regions.
