With kids, you have to think outside the box. You might buy a kid's game and it bores them to tears but they desperately want to play whatever they see you playing.
When my niece was small, you know what we used to play? Gran Turismo. I'd select Mini Coopers or something slower and we'd "race", which was basically me ramming my car into her car and teasing her for running straight into walls. Then at the end, I'd "miss" a ram attempt, scramble to get back into the lead, but she'd just barely cross the finish line first.
When it came to her playing by herself, though, she'd rather be playing with dolls. It was the interaction that was fun, and the belief that she was doing really, really well, even if that wasn't quite the reality.
