The main problem the Wii U is facing is that the Wii's main audience were casual gamers and Nintendo fans. Sure, a lot of other gamers got one as well, but the SD graphics, lackluster online features and lack of AAA multiplatform titles combined with its relatively short lifespan meant that a huge amount of them turned to Sony and Microsoft well before the Wii U launched.

With the casual gamers gone, what's left is the core of the Nintendo fans.

Not enough was done to bring those customers back. If a console can't play COD, FIFA, Madden, Assassin's Creed, Battlefield, FarCry etc, then it simply won't be the first choice for a huge amount of gamers.
