I didn't said it was a bad game. I said is the weakest Final Fantasy.

By far.

I thought FFXII was the weakest entry because of it's borefest inducing combat system and pointlessly big and over designed world ...

Well, by borefest, you mean the automated functions which make the game easier and don't actually have to be used. I didn't use any gambits until I had to fight against the hidden ultima bosses. The big world, to me, was awesome because it allowed for lots of exploration.
Additionally, I thought the "hunts" feature was one of the best implemented side questing options in any ff game ever.
Characters are a bit lacking, but there are some shining spots.
And the ability to see which enemies you wanted to fight made grinding for items a lot easier than in previous titles.

I would say, imho, that the weakest entry (since 7) is 9.
9 had almost no redeemable qualities.
Card game copied from 8
lame characters that weren't interesting in the slightest (aside from vivi), has a couple of the WORST characters ever in ff.
treasure hunting chocobo was incredibly boring
Artstyle was pretty good.

VIII is tough, because there are lots of problems there as well. Draw mechanic sucked. Card game was awesome. Binding spells was awesome. exploration was well done. Story was decent.
