Simply put, I don't think that Sony will follow up with the Vita. It obviously didn't pan out the way they wanted it too. As evidence by them not mentioning it ever. Creating a successor would just detract from what they are completely focused on right now and that is the PS4 and other things like PS Vue and Now.
If by some crazy act they do create one my bet is that they make it a Japan exclusive or something. But even that's doubtful. MH jumping ship really hurt the Vita bad in Japan and prominent 3rd parties (such as Capcom and SE) didn't bite as well, making the situation worse (not to mention the memory card issue).
I am curious as to how Sony will react to people asking about the "next one" though. My guess is that they will stay vague on the issue the and just let the Vita be supported by niche games and indies until that dries up then no more.
